What is an actuary? An actuary is someone who quantifies the financial impact of uncertain events in the future. Think of an actuary as a business professional that predicts the cash inflows and outflows of a company to ensure there is a good balance so the business can operate smoothly. Actuaries work in insurance companies, consulting firms, and many other industries. Read more on our career overview tab.
What is SAM? Student Actuaries at Michigan (SAM) is an organization for undergraduates and graduates interested in the field of actuarial mathematics. We hold mass meetings at the beginning of every fall and winter semester, but we welcome people to join at any point in the year. Our club hosts our very own career fair for actuarial students and also coordinates visits to select companies. Additionally, we provide professional development workshops and sponsor a variety of social events, including IM sports.
These are some of the programs and resources we offer to prospective and current members of SAM:
- Actuarial exam subsidies (exams tab)
- Actuarial career fair (including resume collection)
- Company relations and on-site visits (the nifty 50)
- Professional development workshops
- Social/networking Events (check out our calendar)
- IM Sports
